Caroline Kennedy Withdraws from Race for U.S. Senate Appointment

Caroline Kennedy has taken herself out of the running to be appointed the next United States Senator from New York, filling Hillary Clinton's vacant Senate seat.

This is big news, and sad news for some.

With a name that's magic, a history of doing good work for New York schools, and her family and money connections, quelle surprise.

Some think she turned down this possibility out of concern for Senator Ted Kennedy, her uncle, who is battling a brain tumor.  She didn't give specific reasons for withdrawing, saying it was for personal reasons.

Kennedy may - or may not - have been appointed.  Since Hillary Clinton resigned her Senate seat to become U.S. Secretray of State, the Governor of the State gets to appoint her replacement.  David Paterson, New York Governor, was playing it cool and cagey by not announcing his choice.  (NY Times story here).
