Carole Bell on Sky News (19 July)

Obama Fever!

It's raging in Europe, and around the world. Outside the U.S., people are crazed to hear what Obama's doing next. I was interviewed by the intrepid Steve Dixon on Sky News, and asked to discuss Barack Obama's trip to Afghanistan. I was told this interview would be shown on Sky worldwide.

Shortly before the interview was to start, everything was changed. I was told I would be having "a bit of a debate" with Charlie Wolf, a staunch Republican supporting John McCain. With no preparation for a debate, and about 30 minutes notice, I did the best I could but to make a point, I fear I humiliated myself as I wound up singing on international television!

I confessed that I can't sing, yet had actually sung a song on worldwide TV, when I got into the car leaving Sky's London studios, telling the driver I'd sung the John McCain song, "Bomb Bomb Iran".

"You need three of them," he said.

"Excuse me?"

"To do the harmony, to do it justice," the driver, Martin Kennedy, said in a lovely British accent. "It's a Beach Boys song, it's an arpeggio, and the harmony's the whole point of that song."

He explained, "It's a very old-fashioned round, like a nursery rhyme, like "Frère Jacques".

"How does this relate to the Sky TV interview?" I asked.

"You should have taken two friends along."

Awesome News Carole

I love your blog and you seem to be the most vocal "foreign" Obama supporter I have read so far. Nice to score the "debate" interview although sounds to me like they did you an ambush job setting you up to debate a McCain spokesman. I am sure you did well. Congrats! I'm so proud of you, Carole!

Dear Carole, You did a GREAT job on Sky News! You're really good at thinking on your feet. Bravo! Laura

you go girl!

I remember being in college in Britain and how condescending certain men could be. You really held your own with these gits and made us proud!

A Couple of Facts

Everyone on this site seems to have some kind of complex. Of the three clips I have seen not one of the news presenters has been anything less than professional. The fact they hold you to account is not because they are men or know that you are an Obama supporter -- just doing their jobs. To correct the first posting, the chap on with Carole in the Sky clip is not an "Obama supporter" but a well known Republican analyst; I've heard him elsewhere say that McCain was not his first choice do he is anything but a "McCain **spokesman**". He put his case across plainly and succinctly - didn't notice any sort of 'ambush'. Obama supporters at times act like children, thinking that if the whole world doesn't agree with them then their must be something wrong. Not the way to win an election.

Obama's VP

Carole, You did a fantastic Job, you certainly know your stuff, and that's because you like many other people around the world can sense the *winds of change* blowing. You look and sound VP material. I can't vote for Obama but I can certainly hope and pray that he gets in the white House for the sake of not only the United States of America but the whole world.
